EcoCities 2050

EcoCities 2050 are sustainable urban design and planning projects to address the problem of climate change in cities. The projects feature urban design elements and planning policy designed to mitigate climate change and to adapt cities to global warming. All projects have been produced by design and planning students in university studios directed byDr Rafael E. Pizarro.

Some of the common elements to all projects are on-site food and energy production; on-site rain and grey water recycling and re-use; on-site sewage treatment and re-use; on-site solid waste collection, recycling and re-use; mass public transit systems; roof-top gardens; solar architecture; mixed land uses; road infrastructure for personal transportation devices (e.g. “Segway” vehicles, electric skateboards, bicycles, GPS-guided mini-autos); and physical and policy measures to adapt to rising sea levels (where necessary). All projects also put emphasis on the aesthetic qualities of public spaces.
